ARRIVING IN VIENNA

The children left Munich the next day. An engineer, who was a friend of the family, took them to Vienna in his car. It was a nice day and all the roads were good and clean. All along the way there were big hills. The  fields were green and the hills were full of trees.
I was almost evening when they arrived in Vienna. It was a beautiful city with a lot of lights. The streests were full of lights. Hasan Bey's friend found a good hotel near the Opera Square, the Bristol Hotel. They had dinner in the restaurant of the hotel.
Early the next morning the engineer took them around the city. He showed them the statue of a "yeniçeri" on the corner of a high building.
"This statue is a memorial of the Ottoman armies. At one time in history the Ottoman army surrounded the city. I don't remember the date."
"I think it was 1529," Ahmet said.
They got on a bus full of tourists. The bus took them to a hill near the city.
"The Ottoman armies came as near as this hill. They surrounded the city for months," a guide said. From the top of this hill they could see the city and the Danube flowing through it.
When they were coming down the hill, they stopped at. Grinzing. The engineer drank a glass of white wine but the children drank only tea and milk.
"This place is famous for its white wine. There are many shops selling this wine on this road. This place is famous for another thing too. Some famous musicians, like Beethoven used to come here to drink wine. You can buy pictures of these musicians and send them to your friends."
Ahmet bought some post cards and sent them to the Millers, to their father and mother and to their friends in Turkey. There was a very large park near this place. It was full of high trees and flowers. The engineer took photos of the children in the park with his camera. There were ducks swimming on the small lakes.
"We must catch the bus." he said. So they came to the bus stop and got on the bus going to the city.
In the afternoon the engineer took them to the famous fun fair of Vienna. The children enjoyed themselves very much in the small cars.
Their father's friend said, "Now I'll take you to the biggest revolving wheel in Europe. It is 65 metres high."
There was a big queue in front of the revolving wheel. They bought their tickets and got on the revolving wheel. Zeynep chose a seat in the middle. When the wheel began to turn they looked down. It was like an aeroplane. The people on the ground were very small.
"I can't look down any more," Zeynep said. "I don't feel well."
"Girls are always like that," Ahmet said. "Shut your eyes and you'll be all right."
Zeynep shut her eyes and didn't look around. The engineer and Ahmet laughed at Zeynep.
After ten minutes the revolving wheel stopped. They got off.
"Do you feel all right?" the engineer asked Zeynep.
"Yes, I feel all right, thank you. But Ahmet, you are pale. Are you ill?"
"Of course not," Ahmet answered. But he was so pale that the engineer and Zeynep carried him to chair. Zeynep washed her brother's face with cold water. They had to go back to the hotel early.
The next day Hasan Bey's friend took them to the Südbahnhof. It was a big as the other stations in Germany and more modern. The children bought their tickets for the next day. Their father's friend left Vienna in his car and went to Italy.
The children stayed in Vienna one day more. They bought some presents for their father and mother and for their friends in Turkey.

Hasan Bey'in arkadaşı Opera meydanına yakın iyi bir otel buldu, Bristol Oteli. Otelin lokantasında akşam yemeği yediler.
Ertesi sabah erken mühendis onlara şehri dolaştırdı. Büyük bir binanın köşesindeki "yeniçeri" heykelini gösterdi.
"Bu heykel Osmanlı ordularının bir anıtıdır. Tarihte bir zaman Osmanlı ordusu şehri kuşattı. Tarihini hatırlamıyorum."
Ahmet, "Zannederim 1529 idi." dedi.
On dakika sonra dönme dolap durdu.
Ertesi gün Hasan Beyin arkadaşı onları Südbahnhof'a götürdü.
